Moving to Houston

Hi Guys,

Been a long road of many decisions and finally we are moving (awaiting Visas). We are looking at the Katy District (Cinco Ranch) area. We have been told we are mad to just pack up and move to a place we have never been or seen but then hey what is life without a little adventure :-)

My biggest concern at this stage are my kids (5, 12, 15). Can anyone tell me how the school systems work and more important (what sort of school fees are we looking at) ? My research has revealed that there are 3 levels of schooling and a child passes or fails according to a credit rating system - can anyone shed some light on this ? Also I have been told that the kids will have to learn Spanish as a second language - is this a compulsary school subject ?

Then the all important question - electrical appliances is basically a toss up between (sell all and buy new) or (take with and get converters). Any comments regarding this ? Kitchen stuff we will sell but TV, VCR, DVD players (eish man!)

Chat Soon !!

There will be a Bring & Braai at Mansfield Dam Park on Sunday, November 12, 2006.

The braai will start at around 11 a.m. and go until the last person goes home. The park has a "no glass" policy, so remember to buy beer in cans and not bottles. We usually occupy the two picnic tables closest to the playground.

This might be a good time to bring some chicken to braai as well. (That's a "barbeque" for those who don't know.) Join us for a day of fun. Bring your own food and drinks. We'll have fires available. It would probably be a good idea if some of you could bring along some charcoal just in case we run out. You can always find a reason to use it at home if it wasn't needed at the braai.

When: Sunday, March 19, 2006

Where: Mansfield Dam Park, Austin.

More Info: $8-00 per car (at the park entrance gate)

Directions:
If you're coming from the Cedar Park / 183 area, go south on 620, through the 2222/620 intersection and continue past the Mansfield Dam wall (on your right). Shortly after the Dam wall, turn right onto Mansfield Park Drive. Continue on this road to the big Mansfield sign on your left and turn in there. Go through the gate ($8-00 per car). Then drive down to the stop sign and turn left toward the playscape. We cannot reserve a site, however we'll arrange for someone to go early and 'claim' a site for us. We'll also hang the SA flag up there so you will be able to find us.
If you are coming up 620 from the Lakeway side, then you will turn left onto Mansfield Park Drive shortly before the dam wall.

Here's a map.

DATE
Labor Day Weekend - September 3-5, 2005

VENUE
This year the event will be held at Riverside Resort in the Canyon Lake area. The accomodations are excellent - rooms, cabins, RV & camping sites. The grounds are pretty and shady, and there is even a swimming pool!

The Riverside Resort Reservations must be made directly with the owner, Mr. Dearing at Phone (830) 964-3629. When making the reservation, make sure you mention that you are part of this group so that we are not scattered all over the place. And please book early - these places fill up quickly over long weekends.

__________________________________________________________________

Texas Potjie Festival History
The Texas Potjie Festival began when and a group of friends decided to organize a South African get together with a Potjie competition as the theme. Fred and his wife, Yvonne had coordinated a Thanksgiving Dinner for South Africans in 2000 and due to its success, and the enthusiasm from the South African community living in the Houston area, there were calls for another gathering. Since its inception the event has grown considerably. In the first year about 80 people came out, in 2002 about 140, and 2003, with the total prize winning purse being over $500 in cash and prizes, a total of 204 people attended. Last year a committee, made up of Penelope, Rhys, Gerhard, Ian, and Hugo, was formed to help organize the event. But it must be said that everyone’s participation in The Texas Potjie Festival has made it a successful and enjoyable event.

The addition of the new web site will only help establish the Texas Potjie Festival as an annual event. Our Sponsor section highlights and advertises business and individuals who help make the The Texas Potjie Festival a reality. Please support these people with your business. The Texas Potjie Website will give general information, announcements, and articles pertinent to the South African community living in Texas. Please register on this site if you would like to contribute documents such as recipes and participate in the forums etc. If you would like to be included in all collaboration on events etc please subscribe to the Mailing list. For any suggestions what you would like to see added to this site please email texaspotjie.com]Texaspotjie

Austin: Braai, Nov 23rd

Braai in Austin!

We're having another braai! (That's a "barbeque" for those who don't know.) Join us for a day of fun. Bring your own food and drinks. We'll have fires available. It would probably be a good idea if some of you could bring along some charcoal, just in case we run out. You can always find a reason to use it at home if it wasn't needed at the braai.

When: Sunday, November 23, 2003 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Where: The Mansfield Dam Park

Entry Fees: $8-00 per car (at the park entrance gate)

Directions:
If you're coming from the Cedar Park / 183 area, go south on 620, through the 2222/620 intersection and continue past the Mansfield Dam wall (on your right). Just after the Dam wall, turn right onto Mansfield Park Drive.
If you are coming up 620 from Lakeway side, then you will turn left onto Mansfield Park Drive, just before the dam wall on your left.

More Details:
There are no electric outlets (not that we need any) and only one braaier / bbq at each camp-site. We are going to 'claim' the two sites at the playscape and rockclimbing wall, so we will have 2 braaiers. We may also bring another weber and that should be good. Guys, Esmé went up there a few days ago and Tania van den Berg got this great spot for us. It's a beautiful spot, with a great big playscape for the kids as well as a rock-climbing wall too. It's away from the water so the parents with little kids will not have to worry. Also a beautiful area to take a nice stroll.

It may also be a good idea to bring some chairs and blankets to sit on, a warm jacket (this is TX weather, it could be hot or cold !), and we also need some tables. There is only one table per site and we will get 2 sites close together, but if you have a table, fold-up table or camping table, PLEASE bring it along. There are bathrooms close by, and a little store where we can get ice too.

Brenham: Texas Potjie Kompetisie #3, 4-5 Oct

Hi Everyone!

The Texas Potjie Tradition has become entrenched!! We have had calls up in Washington, asking whether the function is still going to take place, and from all the interest and the clamoring, it would be a pity to let such a fine SA tradition and opportunity for "byeenkoms" just fade away. So we want to let you know that plans are now in motion to get the show on the road once again. Potjie Kompetisie # 3 is scheduled for the weekend of October 4 & 5, 2003. The venue will be the same camp grounds as in previous years - Bilski Camphouse in Brenham - as it is ideally situated midway between Houston and Austin. We hope to see you there, and also we ask you to pass this on to those who are not on the mailing list or whose e-mail addresses has changed.

A Houston committee is presently being formed and we will let you know the names and e-mail contacts as soon as these have been finalized. We know that you will support the team in their efforts to make THIS Potjie competition, an even greater success than it has been in the past.

We have had some input about some things people would like to see at the Potjie - someone suggested we bring along our old SA magazines, place them in a central place and swap them for those we have haven't seen. Good idea!! Another suggestion has been that those who are into traditional SA baking, canning, and the making of boerewors, droewors, biltong, etc, bring their wares, and we'd organize a mini farmers' market for them. Another suggestion is that we "helpmekaar" by bringing details about our lines of business. We could then set up a directory of names to send out, which we would all find very useful. Please let us know any other ideas.

We will be contacting you "kortliks", as soon as the details are finalized, but in the meantime, mark your calendars! Hope you will be able to join us. Bly lekker.

Fred and Yvonne Reinhardt

((this notice came to me via via fwds so i do not have any details beyond what u see but if there is any interest i will track down the details so let me know if yur interested..pity I cant go i'm in San Diego))
