I was wondering what others did when they go back to South Africa for a holiday/visit etc regarding Medical Travel Insurance?

Most standard company Medical Insurance does not cover travel outside the USA, so if yours does not - what do you do?

Purchase Medical Travel Insurance? Go without, and if something catastrophic happens in SA, just end up in the public hospital? (e.g. if you are in a car accident, and you don't have proof of medical aid on you, you will likely be transported to a state hospital - although you could end up in a private hospital if that is closest and your condition is life-threatening, but once stablized, if they cannot ascertain your medical aid, you will be transferred to a state hospital).

It seems to me that most Medical Insurance gives you pretty good cover for private hospital, but for anything serious, they strive to repatriate you (covered by the insurance) so that you can 'recover' here in the USA.

I know American Express had a program several years ago if you purchased the tickets with their card that you would be covered, no matter where you went....but have no idea if that's still going....

I just did some traveling and got real cheap insurance that got added as an extra to it, but you are probably right about it only being domestic....

Our insurance covers us on international travel, we also confirm with them our travel plans before we fly. It is always a good idea to contact your insurance company and to comfirm with them before you leave.

Hi Malamute - I went onto Insuremytrip.com and chose Atlas Insurance, it was very cheap and adequate coverage.
