It has been a few months since the previous posting on the Texas Potjie, so I thought I'd bring it to everyone's attention again...

This year's Texas Potjie Festival will again be held in Rusk (TX) over Labor Day Weekend (Sep 4 - 7, 2009). That's a little more than a month away. If you're planning to go and you haven't booked yet, you need to do so now.

For more information, please visit www.texaspotjie.com. You can also get further information on South Africans in Austin and the SA-Austin Blog.

The Potjie seems to get bigger and better every year, and this year will be no exception. We have been to the last 5 Potjies and they have all been a blast!

Hallo Almal,

First, GO BOKKE!! Well it’s less than 3 weeks till the Labor Day Weekend and the response to this year has been magnificent. It’s going to be a great weekend. Just a few things to take note of:

1) In the previous update we said that RusK is in a DRY county. This is not the case. Carol of KOA informed me that Cherokee County has gone “wet” this last year--meaning stores do sell Beer and Wine.

2) We have posted the Texas Potjie Festival Schedule and Cook-off Competition rules on the website. Some of the things planned for the weekend are a watermelon eating contest for the kids, a piñata whack, a cricket and touch rugby match, tug-of war contests, the sokkie, and the Afrikaans Kerkdiens on Sunday morning. Go to the www.texaspotjie.com website for more details

3) Lastly if you have not booked there are still a few (a very few) RV and camp sites still open. Call Carol or Walter at KOA 903-683-6641 to book your site now.

Can wait to see ya’ll at the Potjie.

Regards

The Texas Potjie Festival Team

Here are 5 new announcements about this year's Potjie:

  • LIVE RUGBY. On Saturday 5th September 2009 the Springboks are playing the Wallabies. As KOA has Direct TV we have ordered Sentanta Sports so that you can watch the Bokke. We will be recording the LIVE game at 4 am and rebroadcasting it after the two Currie Cup games the same day. Cost is $1.00 at the door to cover the cost of Sentanta.
  • To make things fun and different this year we have decided to make the Sokkie a "HAT THEME" party. That means everyone should bring along and wear their favorite party hats—be they outrageous or plain WEAR a hat to the Sokkie on Saturday night.
  • We will be taking a Group Photo after the Church Service on Sunday morning. We will meet in front of the pool at 11 am to take the photo.
  • KOA has informed us there are camp/cooksites that have water and electricity. The sites are nearby the large Party tent and not far from the pool as well. Unfortunately these sites have no trees for shade, but if you have canopy tent and want the convenience of electricity and water you might consider booking these sites.
  • The Texas Potjie Festival Schedule and Competition rules have been posted on www.texaspotjie.com. Please take a look at these.

Also, if you haven't heard before, the county within which Rusk falls has recently switched from a "dry county" to a "wet county". That means you should be able to buy beer at convenience stores in the area if you run out.

See you there!

To all of you who have been wanting to come to the Texas Potjie Festival, or those who haven't heard about it before: Do try to come next year! This thing is growing bigger and better each year. In 2008 we had approximately 400 people attending. This year there were more than 600 people!

One of the very nice things that I find about the Potjie is seeing all my "Potjie pelle" from previous years. This year was our 6th time attending. It was so nice to see so many people from previous Potjies and catch up with what has been going on in their lives over a dop!

Try to come next year! Labor Day weekend!
