Go to this link. You will need the reference number generated when you entered, your last name and date of birth. Remember to check for each one who entered separately - e.g. each of 2 spouses.
However, by now, if you had won, you should have received your letter.............but you never know with the post!

Of course if one won via USAFIS there is no way to use the link given above, because one doesn't have one's confirmation number . . .
I tried to obtain my confirmation number from KCC, but they will not issue it again. So, with the unreliable mail system in SA there is a concern that one may never receive one's interview pack. What a pity that won't be!
Anyway, just a question:
How in the world does the cut-off numbers work that are published in the monthly VISA bulletins? I must be honest that this holds true mistery for me. I noticed that the cut-off number for AFRICA for August was some finite number (65,000 I think it was - this is of course w.r.t. DV2010), yet for September all DV2010 numbers became "current" again (in fact for almost all parts in the world)! Jeepers, this makes no sense! One would think that in the last month of DV2010 they would pretty much have filled up the 50,000 quota and would know exactly where to limit the numbers (somewhere close to the previous month's) - so how can thay make all numbers current all of a sudden again?
Another question: Once one's number becomes current, does it mean that EVERY selected entrant with a number less than the cut-off number WILL BE posted an interview pack? I mean, is it guaranteed? What if one's pack went missing in the post? Does this mean that if next month's cut-off number is now higher than the month before (when one' number became current for the first time) that one will have another opportunity and may request a re-issue of one's invitation letter? What I mean is, once one's number had been passed (exceeded) can one still request to be interviewed in the event that one's invitation letter went missing in the mail the month before (when one's number became active for the first time)? Or does it work like this, that once one's number had been passed their system can never go back to numbers missed before?
So many questions - hopefully someone have more insight? Will appreciate some better understanding of this cut-off system and how it works as it is pretty foreign for my logic.

We also won via the ever so infamous USAFIS route. Thinking back now, I don't think we would have won if it were not for USAFIS for the simple reason that I would have remembered to enter for maybe two years and then would have realizes the odds and given up. I "bought" the 4 year entry program for my wife and I and here we are winners in year 3.
I suppose at the end of the day USAFIS is a legit organization and they did provide a very valuable service to me. We South Africans are at times lazy to do things for ourselves, which is probably why these Q-for-U companies can make a living over here. At the end of the day USAFIS is nothing more than a Q-for-U type place. To me I got my money's worth from them through and through.
In terms of getting your entry number, that's easy - I simply mailed them and asked for it. USAFIS sent me all my details a couple of days later and I could go onto the status check page and do the check.
Just a last word; beware of all the other crap these guys are going to try and sell you. Especially the dodgy sounding lawyers that will "handle your case" if you'd won. Works out to almost $4k for a family of three for something you can do yourself.

Reply: subscribe to the visa bulletin, then you can track how soon your interview will be coming up. The cycle starts in October of each year and runs through to September the following year. There are only 50,000 visas and about 120,000 people are sent a winning the lottery notification letter. Thousands of people change their minds during the process, either they have stronger family ties, a good job, not enough money, a criminal record or whateaver, they just opt out of the process. If you have a high number your chance of securing one of the visas is also diminished. So, if you have a high number, just take it cool, and be like the karate kid. "wax on wax off " Don't sell your house yet or even let your employer in SA know you have won until you have been for the interview.

Reply : most of the folk (and have a low number) who completed and returned the forms to KCC will get an interview until the numbers run out. If your interview letter goes missing you could become a statistic and loose out. That is why its so vital that you subscribe to the visa bulletin. If its a month before your visa number is about to become current, i would email, or even call KCC
Once your number is passed you will have to get very pro active in contacting KCC. as evey number published by KCC will be eligable for securing one of the 50,000 visas.
What is your number ? you dont need to state the last three digits eg 21,xxx
In 2003 when we were notified it appears that all the winning letters were mailed from some mail forwarding place in Isando, Johannesburg. We did not use USAFIS. We applied direct to KCC it was the last year they were accepting the letter with photograph attached. After 2003 everything changed to the online system, USAFIS appear to have a different system of notification that i do not fully understand.
So many questions - hopefully someone have more insight? Will appreciate some better understanding of this cut-off system and how it works as it is pretty foreign for my logic.

Hi Reichette,
It's really quite simple. Think of standing in a queue. It is a long queue with most of the people standing outside waiting to get in. The first person is helped first. The door is opened every now and then and more people are let in to wait inside.
That's how the numbers work. You are allocated a number, based on when your name was drawn. If you were one of the first from Africa to be drawn it will be a low number (eg AF...4000) and you will be notified in early April and have your Interview in October or November. If you were drawn last you number will be very high (AF...67000) and you will get your notification letter in June and have your Interview in August or September - if at all. Every month they 'open the door' and let some people in. If your number is less than the number on the Visa Bulletin then you WILL have an interview scheduled for that month. If your number is Higher, you will have to wait for the next month. This carries on every month from October to September. If your number doesn't come up - you WILL NOT get an interview.
If all numbers are Current, it means that EVERYONE will get an Interview date. In my queue scenario it means the doors would now be wide open and everyone could go into the building.
Just for interest. Your number has no relation to 50,000 visas that are available. I don't know how your number is assigned, but if your number is AF50000 it does not mean you were the 50,000th person to be drawn in the DV lottery. It doesn't mean you are the 50,000th person from Africa either. There are some things will never know I suppose. There have to be some mysteries in life.

Thank you all for your trouble - appreciated.
I think I understood the concept pretty well from the start - it is just the application that seemed awkward and that "threw" me off somewhat. But it is clearer now - thank you.
Our number is in the very low 20,000 so I estimate that it can (hopefully) become current around Dec/Jan. My concern initially was just that we may not receive the Invitation pack (compliments of the SA mailing system) and by being "blind" w.r.t. the Status Check facility, may not even know that we should have expected an invitation pack. I now understand - thanks to your explanations - that the cut-off numbers published monthly in the bulletin is done so 2 months in advance and can also serve to "warn" me if I did not receive my invitation letter before the month of the interview.
Thanks again for all your help!
