Hi all

I have pretty much finalized my forms to send to the KCC and I have one more question. What to do about these pesky name changes in SA? I was born in good ol' Pietersburg, which is now Polokwane. My daugther's birth certificate stated I was born in Pietersburg (and not Polokwane). I am still waiting for my requested birth certficiate from home affairs (meant to take 6-8 weeks, now waiting for 17 weeks - don't you just miss SA?!) to see what they put my place of birth down as.

My gut feel is to put down "Polokwane (Pieterburg), South Africa". What do you think? I know the documents should corrborate what you put down on your forms, but what if my daugther's birth cert states Pietersburg and mine says Polokwane?

As annoying as the namechanges are I suggest you write the place of birth exactly as shown on the birth certificate. It does not matter if yours says P'burg and hers says Polokwane, just write it as shown on the certifcate ... avoid unnessecary questions would be the best way to go I reckon.

My mom was born in Mufulira in Rhodesia, which is what I sent in on the forms to KCC. Only after sending the forms did we apply for our birth and marriage certs, which at first didn't have any details for my parents. So after I phoned home affairs to ammend the information my birth cert still stated Rhodesia, which I recon it should state as that was the official name at the time of my mom's birth.
So the short of the story is that the previous name was acceptable and valid.

Ok, so I was born in Pietersburg in 1974. So I filled in Pietersburg, Transvaal, South Africa. Correct?

As suggested earlier, write what is shown on your birth certificate. If the birth certificate says "Pietersburg, Transvaal, SA" then I suggest you write that on the forms. In the end I dont think it is a big deal as most people will know that it is the same place, and whichever one you choose to write wont be the determining factor whether you get the visa or not. I simply suggested you complete the forms in a manner that is consistent with your supporting documentation to avoid any possible delay.

Yes, thanks, that is what I thought. The little issue is that after 20 weeks of waiting I still do not have my birth cert in hand. The Dept. of Home affairs keep telling me to call back in three more weeks everytime I call them. I hope to have my certificate before I have to go for my interview Dec 2010 - Feb 2011 (remember that this is Africa).

So, long story short, if I don't receive my BC soon, I am forced to draw conclusions to what it says... Conclusions such as my mother's birth place. She was born in Elim, a very small towm 18km from Louis Trichardt. I don't know if my BC will say she was born in Louis Trichardt or Elim, so I am going to put down Elim, Louis Trichardt.

By the way, how seriously do they look at this? Reason for denial or not?

Hi Riaan,

Have you tried to contact home affairs help line? Then they will be able to tell what stage your application is in, and they get back quickly as well and most of the time the problem is not your local home affairs but PTA at the records centre.
If you go to the home affairs website you can check status of your applications (ID passports, birth certificates etc. Just by enetering your ID number. If you do not find the number contact me I will look for it and give it to you.

I went through the same problem last year.

Go to your local office and do a new application.
My father got my unabridged birth Certificate within two weeks.

Reading these posts about how people struggle with Home Affairs makes me so relieved that I have my unabridged marriage certificate (although I am now divorced) and unabridged birth certificates of myself and my kids. I keep them in my "Very Important documents" file so that they never get lost! (By the way, it was surprising easy to get them from Australia).

Good luck to you all - I hope you get the certificates eventually.
