  1. There is so many different options. Much cheaper to get medical through an employer but if you can't, the cost will depend on your deductible. Go to Blue Cross Blue Shield's website. BCBS and enter information for your family. That will open a page with all the different options for health insurance through them. Of course BCBS is not the only provider and you can also check out www.ehealthinsurance.com for quotes from more than one company. You will need a zip code to do this, so search online for the zip code of the area where you want to live.
  2. I've had two babies in the USA. First one was covered under Medical Insurance through my employer. We only paid our deductible which was a drop in the bucket compared to the second baby that was not covered as I am a stay-at-home-mom and most private insurance companies do not cover maternity at all!. BUT you can arrange payment plans and discount packages with your OB and your hospital before delivery and then you have the option to pay immediately or pay them off. Depending on your income you can apply for Medicaid and the baby (and possibly you too) will be covered by the state.
  3. Yep, I always leave our mail lady something in the mailbox this time. Ours give us something too.
  4. I usually just set mine to the -whatever hour that is correct and not on CST or EST or timezones. Think it has to do with daylight savings time. So, just save your profile on the correct hour instead of timezone. Hope this makes sense :-)
  5. Always nice to get new members with immigration experience/advice/know-how. Welcome to SAUSA

  8. Happy to hear that it is improving. So sorry he (and you) has to deal with this!
  9. What did the dr. say? Good luck with all of this. Medical costs and insurance in the USA is a joke.
  10. Just use the credit card like you would use a debit card. If you don't have the money, don't swipe the card. This way you don't have to worry about the high interest charges.
  11. I have been trying to find a definite answer to this question everywhere. Hoping someone here can help me. My SIL is working on cruise ships. She wants to visit us for one month before her next cruise begins. She will enter on her B1/B2 visa for visiting us. My question now is how does she change her status to C1/D to start working on the cruise? I've heard so many different things and have no idea what the correct answer is. Her hiring company (Steiner) just said they deal with the work visa and can't help with the change. The embassy/consulate told her she has to file for change of status during her visit which takes up to a month to get done. She'll only be visiting for a little less than a month...
  12. Vonage is a great option if you live somewhere with fabulous internet service. In our area, the internet...not so good
  13. Hi Kathie. I just answered you on the other thread where you mentioned having trouble contacting people Check out Uniontelecard for phone cards. You dial a 1 800 number here; enter a pin; then the SA number (011 27 followed by the SA number - leave out the zero). I haven't had problems using them. We usually buy the Crazy USA card. Minutes to land lines are much better than to cell phones.
  14. Candidate, buy telephone cards and call those people on their home or cell phones. This website (Uniontelecard) has a lot of different cards to choose from. I usually buy the Crazy USA card. Calls to home phones are much cheaper than to cell phones.
  15. Individual health insurance (in general) does not cover maternity, so you'll have to pay for all the maternity care; lab tests; birth and hospital stay. Many hospitals and doctors have discount packages for people paying in cash and you should call the providers in your area to find out if that is their policy. When I started calling around, I was surprised that the hospital was actually the cheaper (and safer) way than a birthing center or home-birth. But that might be different where you are.
