  1. Oscar, you are a life saver. I think since we only talk more about coming over and less about the stresses involved when all is settled and dealing with regular life. As human we like struggle. I will definitely start looking at either a new job or volunteering some more getting used to normal life. Instead of adventure and worry all the time. Its interesting reading other peoples experience.
  2. Hi All, Hopefully someone can share some light and more experience. I moved to the US mainly because of the opportunity it provided, not running away from crime or something or other. I have been busy for almost 4 years straight since moving here, but lately I hit a bit of a lull. I am well settled completed certifications and now all the great opportunities are coming my way. But somehow I still miss home, I have visited twice this year and inspired to help make south Africa better. Is this the idealist in me or does every immigrant go through the 4 year itch. In my case about 3.8 yrs. I am afraid I will pack go back to SA and regret it. Everything is working just right and friends are good (nice close nit community), its just this nagging feeling of wanting to do more, and lets say I've always liked travelling and the new experience. One option is looking for work that will allow me to travel more. Please share your experiences. Its just driving me mad. I don't feel like starting over.
  3. Thank you Shaun, that was really good advice. I had to learn to say no and remember marketing basics. Because from when you land someone is already selling you something.I agree that it is all relative, I pay almost $3k in property taxes a year and why because the area has good schools. That's close to what my sister pays for 1 child for private school in SA. I don't live in a fancy house. So you have give some to gain somewhere else. I found I spent more money on health care the first two years because I was getting sick (adjusting), and settling is not cheap. Now year 3 I can say I am slowly reaping the benefits. Car insurance has gone down and utilities have gone down. Over time results are positive. This came with a high price almost all my savings are gone and I had to start from scratch. Its not easy but you work harder.
  4. Oscar I thought I was the only one, buying clothes back in SA and moving with them to the US. I have found that for good quality clothes that can last more than few machine washes at a minimum I need to spend $75 an article. All my woolies clothes I came with or bought in SA last year look way better than the clothes I bought at Kohl's/Old navy/Macy's when I moved here. Even some of the clothes I bought at M&S in the UK still look good and I bought those items in 2005. Even winter coats if you are not willing spend $250 or more, you end up with coat that's not pure wool. Yes some electronics on the other hand are very cheap. I think you learn with trial an error. I am still getting use to the fact that fresh vegies, fruits and good cuts of meat are expensive. But other than that things are slowly working out.

  6. Now I hope the government has proper centralised database including finger prints so they can catch all the criminals that are roaming around. Make the country safer. The other day I read an article on why the UK took away our visa requirement. Apparently 6,000 illegal chinese immigrants were caught with South African Passports trying to enter the UK and they had never been to SA. I was really surprised on 1 the number of people who would try to perpetrate such fraud and reallt six thousand of them and never been to SA. I knew of other African countries using SA passports illegally in the UK, because UK border agency would catch the individuals by asking something stupid like whats the Capital city of SA or how do you spell Jo'burg, numebr of official languages in SA etc. I am glad they are making some headway SA citizen have more priveleges than most countries globally. I didn't know that until I moved UK and US on how freely we can uproot and travel around. Have access to embassies and easily get your id and passport. Provided you follow the law.
  7. Hi SJ27, I hope this helps try looking at international agencies that have offices in SA i.e. Robert Walters, RobertHalf (I am in the Accounting field hence the options). Then contact their international recruiting division they might have an individual there who can pass on the information. Use career junction to get agency names and look at their websites. Another option is Indeed.com but its hard to look for employment while you have a SA address. But then you just have to keep on applying I would say instead of having a just two places as options expand your net US has other beautiful places with available jobs. The company he works for in SA is it international? then he might start looking there as well. Sometimes manufacturing/productions based jobs are in middle america. Expand a little and keep the faith. Eli
  8. Hi Gillchan, Its probably because SA is trying to comply with international law/local law because the one parent can kidnap their children and then you can turn around and sue the goverment for not following due process. Probably it has happened thats why they are being so particular in your case. Single parents is a case of if father/mother is unknown then chances of being sued are less. Just my two cents, because with the world becoming such a small place (meaning the ability to marry citizens from other countries) kidnapping by former spouses/families of former spouses is happening more and more. Eli
  9. Thanks Malamute, now that makes sense about the visas. To answer your second question about the matrik certificate, she lost her original certificate and only has the transcript. So when she went to the department of education, they said no they will not reprint because of the lower standard grade. She decided that she will do what they ask her to do which take two subjects to replace the lower standard grade subjects. Then hopefully before the interview nexy year March/April she will have the reprint matrik certificate. Will keep you guys updated on the whole process.
  10. Hi All, One of my family members won (I did not think in million years we would be lucky twice) me and then her, and the letter said 125,000 people were selected for further processing. Which is a first because when I won in 2009 they only selected 55,000 applicants for further processing unless I read my letter wrong. Which happens. Fortunately her case number is in the mid 30,000 which is way lower than mine which was around 50,000. But I made it I am here. My question is since the department of education does not want to issue her the green colored matric certificate because some of the subjects she had in high school were lower grade, they told her she needs sub two of the subjects this year. Then in January following year they will give her the green certificate if she passes the subjects based on the current requirements. Will this affect her application in some way? because she does have a national diploma and proof that she attended the local community college. She holds a steady job (past 10 yrs) and can show proof of funds etc. Its just the green certificate thats giving our family nightmares. Comments will be appreciated. Eli

    Medicals

Glad to hear that the medical aids in SA are still reimbursing some of the costs. Getting something back is better than getting nothing. Worse thing you can ever do is not submitting the expenses in my opinion. Cheers!! Eli
  12. Thank you for the article Malamute, I needed a bit of a push. I sat for the first part of the CPA exam and failed by 2 points (got 73) and was a bit down. This article does prove that hard work and dedication can result into something worth having. Back to my books before I go to work. I can do this. Eli
  13. I had chickenpox when I was around 5 and had chicken pox vaccine later on (probably around 12/13, there was an outbreak). This year I went for some blood work and my RN said I need to have the chickenpox vaccine again because she said they couldnt find the virus in my body. Submitted paper work of my medical history and went for a second test they just couldnt find the virus. So I had to go for a first and second short (booster)side effects are terrible not as bad as the chickenpox (tiredness, nausea etc.). Because I would have had to sign a waiver saying I cant sue them if something went wrong with the procedure I was having done. Getting back to the story she said a certain number of people (including me)vaccines wear off after a while. So I musnt be surprised if I get chickenpox. I was like are you kidding now you tell me. By the way does anyone know why they check if you are male or female. I found that test a bit odd? Now I messed up the thread sorry everyone. I just had to tell my story. Eli
  14. My thinking is as soon as know that you are a winner, contact KCC and submit the birth certificate all other documents they need as proof. Then I think you should be okay. Good luck. Eli

    Uscis Fee

Hi Tami, If they dont accept paypal then just use your credit card because if anything goes bad then your card insurance will cover it and stop any unauthorised future payments. Banking details are a big no no unless you trust the site. Since this a new fee caution!! is the best way to go. Sorry your link doesn't work. Its says something about the page not existing. Eli
  16. Yes I think it does. I have friend with student loan and she tried to refinace her house with her husband, (interest rates are so low) and she couldn't because she has too much debt. But now since she is back in school the student loan won't show on her credit report, and that means she can refince if all their credit and earings are in order. Eli

    Interview

Congrats, oh and dont run in the street naked you might get arrested for indecent exposure, hahahaha. Good luck with the final moving preparation. Eli
  18. It varies, I have a friend she was unemployed for a while and she had to pay $600 (Carefirst)for the same cover I have though my employer for only $120 a month this excludes dental care insurance $5 and prescription medication cover $20. Every state differs and every employer differs. If you are unemployed shopping around does help. And Walmart has medication discounts for people without prescription medication cover. Eli

    Dv2013

I hope you did save your receipts because your medical aid can pay out some of these costs. Just submit the receipts then they will refund you what is part of your coverage. I submitted everything to discovery I think they refunded me close to 60 or 70% of the amount I paid. That was a good surprise considering I wasn't expecting anything from them. Eli

    Interview

Other individuals think that if they mentioned that they had ten children for example that they will not win the visa. So they think lying will better their chances of winning. You know desperate people 99% of the time do stupid things. Most people dont read the instructions or are not fortunate enough to have or know about SAUSA. Thats why people still pay those agencies (I call them scammers)to enter on their behalf, because they have to believe that paying will help them win. Eli

    Interview

Yes its nerve racking but once they say raise your right hand you know you are good to go with the visa. But funny I was nevous even when I landed the first time with my bags and all. I thought someone at TSA would stop me because I looked them funny or something and deny me entry. But that was a breeze too, I am just a worrywapper thats all. Think of it this way, You will be fine you have done all you can do. Good luck. Eli
  22. Malamute I have a question what if the individual gets US employment as soon as they arrive and the job has health insurance benefit are they covered under the new law immediately or they have to wait for lets say six months to a year before they are covered. Just curious. Thank you and you are awesome you give the most detailed answers. Eli.

    Interview

My interview was for 1pm and there was guy from Capetown and a couple (DV lottery winners) and one other couple immigration through sponsorhip. Once you are in you are looking at 2-3 going from window to window (but it is worth it) it be can one of those days were you are in and out in an hour or it could be till 4:30/5 but they just close the doors with you in. It depends. Just don't book a flight for 6pm/7pm that evening Joburg traffic can be a nightmare. I went for my interview July 3 years ago. Just have lunch before you go in, I dont think you are allowed to eat inside. I think only immigration visas are done in the afternoon and some other miscellenous services like US Passport replacements etc. Mornings are for the other nonimmigrant visas. The one couple did not get their permanent resident visa because they forgot to mention they had two more kids and it was really sad the woman started crying and screaming at the husband I will never forget that day. Forgive me my mind wanders around sometimes. Good luck let us know how it goes. I am in Annapolis let me know if you have questions. Eli Eli
  24. Sorry to hear about that Hunterblue, I agree with both Malamute and Treverly dont cancel anything with regards to your interview. The good thing about knowing now is that you can get the treatment covered by your SA medical insurance before you move and also get 90 days covered (depending on your health insurance)after you move and settle in the US. Good luck. I hope everything goes well. Eli

    Documents

Yes you can use the statement from Old Mutual/whichever fund and also an email showing how much they will pay out when you withdraw from the fund. All the dates and your documents need to correspond to your visa application. If you can get statements of you investments too and houses go for it. They didnt complain when I pulled out a binders full of information stamped by the banks and FA's documents. Cheers Eli.
