  5. http://newU.S. to keep South Africa embassy closed after threat Buzz up!8 votes Send Email IM .Share Delicious Digg Facebook Fark Newsvine Reddit StumbleUpon Technorati Twitter Yahoo! Bookmarks .Print ..By Agnieszka Flak Agnieszka Flak – Tue Sep 22, 3:33 pm ET JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) – The United States will keep its embassy and other American government offices in South Africa closed on Wednesday after it received an undisclosed security threat, the embassy said on its website. U.S. embassy spokeswoman Sharon Hudson-Dean had said earlier on Tuesday that the assumption was that the U.S. offices would reopen on Wednesday. U.S. State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said the threat was "pretty credible information" against U.S. government facilities in South Africa, the continent's biggest economy. South Africa, due to host the soccer World Cup next year, is not itself seen as a target for attacks. Hudson-Dean said it was the first time in a decade the offices had been closed due to a security threat. Somali rebels have vowed to avenge last week's killing of one of the continent's most wanted al Qaeda suspects in a raid by U.S. commandos, but there has been no previous link between Somali insurgents and South Africa. Bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998 killed 224 people and wounded thousands. "The embassy is tracking developments very closely and assessing its security posture and formulating an appropriate course of action," said Kelly. South African Police Commissioner Bheki Cele did not give details of the threat and said he could not rule out the possibility of a hoax while investigations continued. "It is under control," he told reporters in Cape Town. A U.S. embassy message told American citizens to refer back to a July 29 U.S. State Department worldwide caution. It included a warning that information suggests al Qaeda and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks against U.S. interests in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. As well as the embassy, there are U.S. consulates in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town and other U.S. government offices, including that of USAID, the Agency for International Development. Firstly we had to pay Worldbridge just to speak to them about the Visa application process , then we had to fill out the most ridiculous application visa form I have ever had to do, you can quite clearly see this is something very new to them, at everyone's expense, at the very beginning you have 3 questions to answer defining whether or not you require a UK Visa., and guess what it pops up in bold red , YES YOU DO REQUIRE A VISA, so we filled in the application and was told it only takes a few days, but please just remember there in Nowhere you can contact anyone or even speak to a person, only a fax, so off we send the package with my sons and my passport, and do the waiting game, so Monday i start getting paranoid that I have heard nothing, so begin the search, as we are leaving Sunday , so I search and search and start finding more and more info about their scam and lies that I have sworn to bring to all South afrias attention, because you will never be told , you will just pay and they will never tell you the truth that ALL SOUTH AFRICANS WITH A GREEN CARD DONOT NEED A UK VISA, , please read below to see the different dates as to when this is all meant to be in affect from: 1 April 2009: New visa rules for passport holders from Lesotho, South Africa and Swaziland. 10. Thanks so much to those who have tried helping me, I guess we will have to sort through what we feel the best choice would be for my son, but wow, its not easy, and yes he is missing home, SA and his friends, but the way the schools are here are sometimes very challenging and not very encouraging, I have been here for 7 years and my son arrived in november after SA schools closed, our main choice was not to virtual/home school, because we know he needs to mix and make friends, asap, as well as realizing It is a hige task and responsabilty , not being a teacher, but truthfully i am not sure I am happy with what I am seeing coming out of the local schools in my area, personally i think the only way for us is PRIVATE in forida, The Vitual/home school choice was only to familiarize him until the school year began again, i seriously thought we had done all the homework and had chosen the subjects etc until my husband asked a question regarding, English 11, what would happen once he is finishing grade 12 and they see he didnt have the credits for english 1 , and the same applying to Math, Algebra 1 & 11 as well as Geometry , thats when we landed at the school district guidance who referred us to some alternative school program, and when we researched it , it was a school they are promoting as a school for disadvantaged kids, well i really dont think so, and do i want to send my son to school next door to a prison, etc etc, so for us Virtual/Home schooling is looking much more possitive right now, one needs to realize the florida schools are NOT that great......... thanks again for the input
  11. Please can someone advise me as far as the USA school system goes , I am hoping there are some people out there who have gone this road and who are experienced at the differences. We thought we had done all our homework, but I am coming up against brick walls, and feel like i am running around in circles, after much debating and thinking we somewhat agreed to Vitual/Homeschool my 16 year old son, for the remainder of this school year, mainly to familiarize him with the school system here , as well as allowing him to start fresh as the year begins in August 2009, at first we didnt even have a starting point so began by doing an Evaluation at Sylvan, and i am not sure why ??? and they were so off the mark , it was a waste of 8 hours, so i called the county where i live, who set up an appointment with the head of the guidance counselling dept, to see if his last report from SA last year could be evaluated and get him any credits, well, she suggested and not knowing anything from or about SA , suggested some altertnative school program for him to earn credits, between now and june/July, then he can fit into the school program, the thing is i asked in a very diplomatic way, what kind of people will be in this program and she said basically kids who have dropped out of school along the way, then couldnt get work or needed credits, girls with their babies, and my son looked and was in shock, Sure we dont come from a perfect world, but this is a mess..... please help

    Legal Age in SA

Thanks for that info Dolphie, but i just had and e-mail from my friend today before i even looked here, and apparently , it is 16, for a child to have a say and satay where they choose, they are also legally allowed to leave school to work or do whatever at 16 or the end of grade 9, my friend Bill spoke to childline as far as legal info goes, and they told him that even if a plane is in the air and the one parent is telling the poloce to stop it, as long as the child says no there is nothing anyone can do, so there are always conflicting laws as far as things go, we all seem to assume its 18, it is 18 to sign for anything legal, and at 16 they can even get married with consent, so who the hell knows hey. also the school told him the child can leave school at 16 or grade 9,so we will see, these kids issues are always tricky, even though he is on here he doesnt want to expose himself. So thanks a lot

    Legal Age in SA

This is not for me this time, does anyone know at what age a 16 and a half year old can say which parent they want to live with, the Dad lives here in USA and the child wants to be with the father, but the Mom wont let him. I have read and heard from my own personal experience that one can leave school legally in Sa at the end of grade 9 and at 16 they can decide who they want to live with in the case of divorced parents, but i dont want to give the wrong advice, is there anything legally that should be done if the child wants to remain in the USA, he is legal to be here, if there is anyone who can help i would greatly appreciate it. Our friend is going through hell and paying a huge price because he remarried.

    Switzerland Visa

No hes not here yet, thanks for asking how are you doing ? anyhow he had his interview in JHB in January, and had his Immigration Visa put in his passport to enter USA by july , we actaully didnt expect it all to happen so fast, but anyhow he came in April for my daughters wedding with the intention of staying ,but his father demanded he come back to SA , part of the the mind games, well his green card only arrived after he was demanded to return, so I am still sitting with it until we have put this trip together and when school closes, as I cant afford for him to misplace it , i never know what the next step or mind game will be , I have heard in some tones that a few people have thought i was lying about him coming here just for the green card, which is not the truth, I have serious EX issues, well now we will do what we have to , which is why we are trying to find a way to meet him in Europe before coming on to USA, and somewhere where he wont need to get a Visa from SA , as there is no ways his father will take him for a Visa. If he was here I wouldnt have a problem, as we would just go to Miami, and do both our Visas, as I have had many Scengen Visas in the past wihtout any problems, the issue is hes not here and i am not there, so we are trying to make the best out of a difficult situation, we are NOT trying to cross borders or do anything illegally , I just havent been to or through Switzerland , nor have driven to germany /Austria , even though i have researched my husband is adament there are no borders from switzerland to germany / Austria, so i cant even argue, all i know is i am petrified to do the wrong thing, i would sooner not go, than get into trouble, wow this is becoming a mission impossible, I am starting to think London/ (again) scottland/ Ireland may be easier, Its really painful at times as my husband has to travel and these visas put me off, hopefully next year i can apply for citizenship, Take care

    Switzerland Visa

LAW ABBIDING SOUTH AFRICANS???????? Yip thats what most of us have done, Thanks for all the replies, so now i need to think, Firstly I was not gonna drive at all, my husband would, American, so no need to worry about speeding, too old for that stuff, even on the AUTOBAHN, I did read about the Swiss joing the Schengen, yet when i called they cant give and answer as of now, one needs to check back with them, painful, so you try plan the trip and must wait for them to get all their stuff together, I got a schengen visa last year on my way back from SA into Germany, but just didnt feel like the Miami trip, so I guess theirs no getting around the Europe thing. Although my husband says when hes driven in the past through Europe there is NO border control he says they did away with that years ago???? but somehow i dont believe him, hes American and they take everything for granted. They dont know about getting visas for Travel. Will look into it all, We were just hoping to meet my son in Europe on his way from SA to Orlando in Dec, IS UK still No Visa required for SA, because i believe theyre also possible looking into that.

    Switzerland Visa

Hey Guys Hope youre all doing good, does anyone know if we as SA passport holders require Visas into Switzerland, because from what i have read is that as of now we dont if we have a green card, but they are also in the process of joing the Schengens, probably by the end of 2008, we would like to go to Germany and Austria in December but this whole French & German schengen Visa is driving us crazy, so we THOUGHT we could fly to Switzerland then drive to Germany & austria through switzerland, not sure if it will work, this husband just doesnt get it, I may have a green card but still cant go just anywhere without a visa, I have never done this the driving way so am not sure if we have to go through Borders into Germany ? If all else fails i will have to go back to Miami for another schengen,
  24. Hi there I have found www.slapchips.com pretty good as far as visa stuff goes, it is a bit of hit and miss, and one person will say one thing and anohter something else, sometimes you just have to call the Embassy if you can, I travel a lot and there really are not that many places we can go with that SA passport.
