Hello to everybody. I discovered this site by accident this past weekend, while looking for shops that sell South African goods. I was hoping to find a shop close by but no such luck. My name is Ria Grobler and I live in New Braunfels Tx. My daughter, 3 dogs and 9 cats (5 were newborn kittens and yes the mom snuck out before I could get her spade), and I moved here a year ago from North Carolina and were punished for that with the hottest summer in this area for 100 years! I have lived in the USA permanently since 1985 although I originally immigrated here in 1976 with my then husband. After 5 years I went home for 5 yrs and then returned and the rest is history.
I grew up in Pinetown, Natal and went to nursing school at Entabeni Hospital in Durban. When I returned to the RSA in 1980, I settled in Jo'burg and worked at the new JHB Gen where I did midwifery and then specialized in Pediatrics. Upon my return I still lacked the psych component needed to write state boards and worked as a nursing assistant and as a nanny until I was able to land in the right place at the right time and met the right people.
Terwyl ek 'n boere dogter is, het ek nou al so gewoond geraak om net Engles te praat en te skryf dat ek partykeer 'n bietjie sukkel. Ek het een broer in Kanada maar die res van my familie is nog almal in RSA. Ek praat darem elke twede week met my ma so ek het darem nie my taal heeltemal verloor nie.
While reading many of the posts and seeing the frustration with the immigration process and/or the ability to immigrate, I was very grateful that I am a nurse. While I am no expert in the field of immigration, I believe that it is one profession that opens many doors to many different countries.
I look forward to chatting to many new friends on this site.
