Recommended Posts

Newman Artists in co-production with Swallow Hill Music Association presents

Vusi Mahlasela

“Vusi Mahlasela sings as a bird does: in total response to being alive. Music was at the heart of the struggle for freedom; Vusi was there. Music is at the heart of reconstruction; Vusi’s music is here to stir and delight us. He is a national treasure.”

-Nadine Gordimer, 1991 Nobel Prize winner

“He was a voice during the revolution, a voice of hope, sort of like a Woody Guthrie or Bob Dylan of South Africa, and he still is.”

-Dave Matthews

Vusi Mahlasela, a major voice in South Africa's struggle and triumph over apartheid, will give one concert in Denver on Thursday 22 June at 7pm at First Divine Science Church of Denver, 1400 Williams St, 80218. Vusi, who taught himself to play on a homemade guitar made of tin cans and fishing line, is today an accomplished guitarist, percussionist, composer arranger, band leader and performer who now enjoys an ever-growing international following. Vusi's melodious songs, which addressed themes of political and social significance, saw to it that he was in constant demand at political rallies and cultural events. His message of peace came to world-wide attention when he performed at the inauguration of President Mandela in 1994 and he numbers amongst the diverse group of official Ambassadors of the Nelson Mandela Foundation's global HIV/AIDS awareness and fundraising campaign which includes Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Annie Lennox, Peter Gabriel, Will Smith and Brad Pitt. In addition to several award-winning CDs, Vusi is featured in Amandla! A revolution in Four-Part Harmony, the celebrated documentary about the importance of music and song in the struggle, and in Tsotsi, the Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Film.
