Info on Austin

Recommended Posts

We have lived in Columbus Ohio since we moved from SA 7 years ago. Topic of conversation is always about moving somewhere without SNOW !! and Austin is a place we looked at originally but because we knew people here, it made it easier to move this side. But we would still like to leave OH in a year or two and if anyone can give us some info on Austin it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

M

Hi candem!

We've been living in Austin for 8 years now and we love it here. We don't live smack in the middle of Austin, but in a smaller community called Lago Vista, which is about 15 miles (as the crow flies) northwest of downtown Austin. It is right next to the biggest lake in the area, Lake Travis.

Sorry, but I can't guarantee NO SNOW here! We had about 1 inch of snow one day about 3 years ago. ;) We had a ball for the 2 hours that the snow lasted!

There are several other South Africans living in the area. I built a website called South Africans in Austin about 7 years ago. It's purpose in life is to tell people about Austin, about South Africa, to spread the word on activities for South Africans in the area, and we arrange a braai twice a year. Check it out.

Feel free to ask if you have other questions.

John

Is snow really THAT bad?? We are living in Cleveland, OH and are about to enter our first winter here! We have just started settling down and made some nice friends, found a good church etc, so hopefully the snow on't be a factor in us having to leave Cleveland too soon...

Thanks John - I will take a look at your website. We have some timeshare points and are going to try and book somewhere in Austin next year so we can spend a few days taking another look. Of course much will depend on whether hubby will be able to continue with his business there or not. He has a business coach franchise which is limited to this area right now.

We don't really mind the snow that much, but we both love to golf and not being able to do that for 4 or 5 months of the year makes for a real long winter !

Cheers

M

Candem:

Austin is really a pretty city. The hills and vegetation are like the eastern transvaal.

So, Candem, how was/is your first winter so far? :)

Been here since '98 ourselves, and except for extreme heat in the summers, it's really a great city - almost like Pretoria in a way.
