Tax consequences for South Africans working overseas

Recommended Posts

There appear to be proposed income tax changes affecting South Africans working overseas. You could face a less generous tax exemption from SARS

Yes, but it won't affect the vast majority of South Africans in the USA who are no longer resident in S.A. for tax purposes. For some, working in places like Dubai, they could still be deemed tax resident in S.A., and will likely be impacted.

It seems more aimed at people who don't end up paying any or much tax, anyway, which doesn't apply to those of us working in the US even if they are still tax resident in SA (except maybe on some G visas I guess but don't see any/many of those active here on SAUSA).

"If a resident works in a foreign country for more than 183 days with no tax payable in the foreign country, that foreign employment income will benefit from double non-taxation. It is proposed that this exemption be adjusted so that foreign employment income will only be exempt from tax if it is subject to tax in the foreign country."
