[at]FranetteM - that's good news :) Not sure when you're expecting to receive your PCC's, but I got a gentleman's number that helps fast track it. Not sure what his name is, but his number is 076 375 6931 (I actually got his details on one of these forums).  He helped me get ours processed much quicker.

So I have a few questions probably for the guys already living in the USA please:

1. When applying for credit, say to buy a house, will the USA bank/institution take into consideration your credit record/bank statements/assets in South Africa, or not at all?

2. What is a Credit Union and how do they differ from normal banks? I've heard that their rates are usually better - can anyone confirm this and also are they available to anyone, or only through your employer?

3. If our applications are approved and we clear customs in USA, how long does it take for the Green Card and Social Security to arrive more or less?

4. As far as I understand we only need our Green Cards to be able to work legitimately. There is no other Letter from Labour department needed? Or do I have it wrong?

1. No. Weirdly, Verizon somehow did (so we could get cell contracts immediately) but generally no. For some countries you can use your Amex credit history but SA is not one of those. It’s usually difficult to get a mortgage with less than 2 years credit history, but some specialist credit providers have ways of doing it for new immigrants. If you have no luck with your bank, ask your realtor to recommend one of these. You should have an easier time getting a car loan. (Suggest getting one even if you don’t need it to help build your credit record.)

2. (No idea, sorry)

3. SS card is usually pretty quick, a couple of weeks. Plastic green card is 1-2 months, but your stamped immigrant visa becomes a temporary green card valid for a year after you enter.

4. Your GC is indeed the only work authorization you need. You will need to know your SSN number though as that is how employers verify everything, so in practical terms you usually can’t start work till you have that.

Heidi556 or Kallas - Please help. Regarding the supporting documents that you scan and email to KCC - were those scanned copies of the originals, or scanned copies of the certified copies please? I'm thinking they want scanned copies of the original documements and then you take the originals, as well as certified copies of them to the interview?

Yes, scan and send the originals and take them plus copies to the interview.

Agree with SJ272 - I scanned the originals to the KCC, which they accepted. I'll then take originals + copies to the interview.

Not yet no. Apparently they schedule from the 15th of each month. So hopefully I'll hear from them sometime from this Wednesday... Have you received your PCC yet?

Just went for my medicals. Two days. First day for paperword, bloods, chest x ray. Second day for consult and vaccine jabs of you don’t have records. It is chill, but costs R6150 (R5450 + R700).

Wow that sounds hectic. Did you have to take your medical records with? What do they consult on?

I actually went to get it yesterday. We'll be sending it through this evening. Which means we will probably only get notified of our interview date next month?

Yeah, you should take records with. I had none, nor did I have records of immunizations, so had to get the flu and MMR vaccine. Consult is just talking to the doctor, and personal questions. The doctor is super friendly, no stress.

Awesome, I’m glad you have all your documents now and sending them in.
