South Africans return to work September 1

Recommended Posts

Business and Hospitals are opening up from September 1, 2020.  Hospitals are open for any type of surgical procedures. Companies are requesting their staff to return to work as well. Staff will be screened daily and provided with masks and Protective shields. Staff over age 60 with medical conditions, need to get a letter from their doctor and submit to their HR department to continue working from home.

What is the source for this?  Seems very heavy handed of the government to determine that staff over 60 MUST return to the workplace and no longer be allowed to work from home unless they have a letter from their doctor submitted to HR?  Surely there are many people who worked at home before and during COVID that will want to - with their employer's blessing - continue working from home?  Unless it means that you can be dismissed for NOT coming to work unless you have such a letter, but that you can continue to work at home if mutually agreed by employer/employee.

Is there news about the curfew being lifted?  If all employees must 'return to the workplace' from 01 September - many do night shift etc, and will need to be en route to work at 11pm etc.?

The Official retirement age is 60 or earlier in South Africa.  Some folk who have been working for over 20 or 25 years at the same job have a retirement age of 65 in their employment contracts. There are also people that have contracts who have been working at the same job for many years to age 62 . The ANC has subsequently reduced the age to 60. But companies are still honoring the retirement dates on long service employees.

But bear in mind, that there are not many people in South Africa that are still working over age 60.

Unlike the USA where you can work as long as you like. There is an employee in my team that is age 76 and still working, and she is quick and fast and does a better job than the youngsters.

Update : The return to work is a request by the SA Gov President Zuma  requiring 50 % of the work force to be at work one week and the following week work from home.
