  1. It took 4 weeks to get mine (in New York) and another guy at my office got his replacement card (his name was incorrect on the first one) in 5 days. Not sure if it was quicker because he had one previously though.
  2. Dis lekker! Macy's wou nie eers vir my 'n kaart gee nie. Het darem toe by Capital One reggekom.
  3. For anyone interested in getting an unsecured credit card, Capital One offers a card for newcomers to the US: http://www.capitalone.com/creditcards/newcomer-credit-card/a/?linkid=WWW_1010_CARD_TGUNS11_CCBRWALL_C3_30_T_CP26517AW Even though the credit limit is very low and the APR insanely high, it should be good for building a credit record as long as you stay within 30% of your overall credit limit.
  4. Hi I'm going to be visiting New York from this Friday (the 8th of July) for a couple of weeks. I'd like to get a prepaid sim as soon as I land so I can phone and use data on my phone. I know in SA you need proof of residence even for a prepaid sim, does this apply in the US as well? Any tips on a good prepaid package to take if I want to use data as well? Thanks!
  5. Thanks for the tip. Luckily her immunizations are up to date and we'll bring her clinic card with us as proof.
  6. Great, thank you very much. Was your son's home language Afrikaans? How did he adapt in a foreign country?
  7. From what I've heard kindergarten is free in the US. Is this correct? Or can someone give me an idea of what this would cost for a 2 year old to go half day. Thanks
  8. Thank you very much for the info! Especially the bit about not saying you want to live their permanently
  9. Does anyone know if a proof of funds is required when goingfor the consular interview for a H1B visa? And if so, how much savings wouldyou need? Or do they take the fact that you have a job secured as enoughproof that you would be able to support yourself?
  10. Thanks so much for all the info! Really starting to look forward to this
  11. One more question. I'll still need to pay the differencebetween the rent I'm getting for my house in SA and the bond, so I'll need totransfer some money back to SA every month. What's the easiest/cheapest/fastestway to do this?
  12. Thanks! So the metrocard would cover you to work and back for a month? Or do you still need to pay tolls on top of that?
  13. Hahaha! Was just thinking about it today when I was at the liquor store. Was buying Castle and thinking I'll really miss that. Thanks again for all the great info! We're just waiting for confirmation about the Visa and then the plan is to go in October.
  14. Thanks again for all the great info. Can anyone give me some info on some of the other basic expenses like food, water and electricity, internet access, cellphone, taxi fees, etc.
